Multi-elemental and Strontium-Neodymium Isotopic Signatures in Charred Wood: Potential for Wood Provenance Studies

چکیده

Abstract The chemical composition of the wood reflects soil over which corresponding tree has developed. Multi-elemental and isotopic signatures, are characteristic underlying rock substrates, potentially powerful tools for determining provenance. These tracers special interest charred archaeological because they circumvent some limitations dendrochronological provenancing linked to tree-ring loss. However, thermal degradation may introduce a significant bias in analyses. This experimental study focused on effects carbonization temperature three geochemical markers: elemental signatures strontium neodymium ( 86 Sr/ 87 Sr 143 Nd/ 144 Nd, respectively). Wood specimens from variety oak trees stand locations were pyrolyzed at four temperatures (ranging 200°C 800°C) analyzed using ICP-MS µ- XRF (X-ray fluorescence) spectroscopy with multiple collection MC-ICP-MS ) (Sr) (Nd) isotope composition. concentration mineral nutrients generally increased temperature, but magnitude enrichment depended element, compartment (sapwood vs. heartwood), geological substrate. concentrations rubidium, strontium, manganese, magnesium, potassium, and, lesser extent, calcium, minimally affected by compartment, ratios between these elements, as well Nd ratios, stable entire range. only selected (calcium or magnesium normalized manganese) successful site discrimination. Therefore, our multi-tracer approach provides promising new information determine provenance wood.

Neodymium and strontium isotopic study of Australasian tektites: New constraints on the provenance and age of target materials

Nd and Sr isotopic studies of Australasian tektites provide info~ation on the age and provenance of the target materials and allow us to characterize the target area and the impact process leading to tektite formation. ENd values of australites, splash-form indochinites, and Muong Nong-type indochinites are indistinguishable within analytical uncertainty and average -11.5 cu. Depleted mantle Nd...

Studies in Wood Decay

Circumstantial evidence is presented which indicates that Polyporus volvatus is parasitic. Cultures of Polyporus volvatus and Fomes igniarius may be obtained from the young sporophores by the tissue method. In Polyporus volvatus the presence of the following enzymes was demonstrated: esterase, maltase, lactase, sucrase, raffinase, diastase, inulase, cellulase, hemicellulase, glucosidase, rennet...

How to Make a Beetle Out of Wood: Multi-Elemental Stoichiometry of Wood Decay, Xylophagy and Fungivory

The majority of terrestrial biomass is wood, but the elemental composition of its potential consumers, xylophages, differs hugely from that of wood. This causes a severe nutritional imbalance. We studied the stoichiometric relationships of 11 elements (C, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Na) in three species of pine-xylem-feeding insects, Stictoleptura rubra, Arhopalus rusticus (Coleoptera, Cer...

The Role of Allelopathy, Heat, and Charred Wood in the Germination of Chaparral Herbs1

Assistant Professor of Biology Whittier College, Whittier, California 90608,USA; and Assistant Professor of Biology, Occidental College, Los Angeles, California 90041 Abstract: The herbaceous flora of the chaparral includes annual and perennial species which differ in their temporal relationship to fire. Germination cues for these herb groups could be expected to reflect these temporal differen...
